Message from the President:
The Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics has a long and distinguished history of advocating for the health and welfare of Maryland’s children and adolescents. Established in 1991, the Foundation has focused on connecting Pediatric practices with resources that support reading, learning and nurturing relationships between children and their caregivers.
Most recently, in three grant cycles across 2021-2023, the Foundation awarded $62,500 in 75 grants to pediatric practices and community-based health organizations to distribute books for children under five years old. The grant distribution process prioritized practices caring for underserved populations.
Our vision is now to make the Foundation an active force for improving the lives of children and families throughout Maryland, while attracting the next generation of pediatric professionals.
To guide this work, we have identified four priorities:
1. Early Literacy, Relational Health & Development
Supporting nurturing relationships, healthy early development, and the foundations of reading and learning.
2. Mental Health, Trauma-Informed Care & Child Abuse Prevention
Promoting children’s emotional well-being and helping families and communities build safety and resilience.
3. Physical Health & Wellness
Advancing prevention, healthy development, and access to comprehensive pediatric care, including subspecialty services.
4. Pediatric Workforce Development & Support
Attracting and retaining the next generation of pediatric professionals while encouraging pediatrician-led initiatives.
Our goal is to help more Maryland children grow up healthy, safe, connected, and ready to learn.
